The Art House Flick
My impression of the film we watched was, it was 80% self indulgent wank and 20% good ideas (read theft worthy ideas)
I enjoyed the idea of making a film with inbuilt obstructions as I feel it leads to an improved end product due to making the director/film maker work harder in their thinking behind the content they are going to produce.
Unfortunatly the original film was that horrid 60’s era self absorbed dross that was produced in great profusion through the late 50’s and 60’s as film makers explored the boundries and conventions of film and production being influenced by the bahaus and da da movements and psychadelic drugs as they were.
I feel because the orignal work was weak the remakes suffered for it and great ideas were reduced to just another collection of irelevent rubbish that will be consigned to the cutting room floor of film history.
All in all interesting in its own way but certainly something that I would of demanded my money back on if I had to pay to see it.
My Influences
My major influences are…
2000ad comics from the 80’s and 90’s due to their cutting edge approach to the genre and their distopian worlds and story lines.
The anarchist writer Orwell through his works Homage to Catalonia and 1984 in particular.
The Danish novellist Sven Hassel through his series on one of the Nazi’s Penal Panzer battalions and the characters within that unit as it shows that humanity can still flourish in the most inhumane and totalitarian of situations.
The zombie movies of George Ramero, in fact any Zombie movie is worthy of note here.
Dr Who and Blakes 7 due to the BBC approach to Sci-Fi which I find more engaging and fresh than its US conterparts work.
The orignal Starwars movies because they made sci fi look gritty and realistic.
Conflict ranging from the Illiad through to the current conflict in Iraq and in particular the first world war.
The Mad Max trilogy and the Steve Jackson Game Car Wars due to making the automobile the ‘iron horse’ of conflict. (Which conversly leads to my love of the Illiad as I find it Mad Max II with chariots.)
The BBC show Minder which gave me my love of english gangster culture.
Australian gangster films such as 2 Hands, Dirty Deeds, Getting Square and Idiot Box due to their unique approach to the caper movie genre.
Punk and Skinhead music and culture due to their anti authoritarian stance
In summary the above cited influences have also been heavily influenced by each other to a greater or lesser degree thus showing the truth in the statement ‘there is nothing orignal in art’.
